PLAYLIST

Patterns

Patterns can contain note and automation data. You may choose to insert Patterns into the Playlist as either Pattern Blocks (6) or Pattern Clips (9). Pattern Blocks and Clips are instances of the same same pattern data. The names for Patterns Tracks (6) are displayed on the left side of the pattern tracks while the names of Patterns displayed as Clips (9) appear in the Menu Bar along the top edge of the Pattern Clip.

Main automation: By default, Pattern Track 9 is named 'Main automation' and is the standard location in which Automation Events are stored. Note that pattern 9 is simply a normal, renamed Pattern which may also be used for note data.

  1. Playlist Menu Button
  2. Tools - Draw ( Shift+P); Paint ( Shift+B); Erase ( Shift+D); Slip ( Shift+S); Cut ( Shift+C); Select ( Shift+E); Zoom to selection ( Shift+Z); Snap Selector;
  3. Live Mode - Appears only when Live Mode is selected from the Playlist menu (1).
  4. Time Markers - It is possible to jump between time markers (see below).
  5. Horizontal Zoom (Timeline Zoom) - Zoom/Snap resolution may be increased by changing the PPQ settings (F11) in the General Project settings. However, the default PPQ should provide adequate zoom/resolution for most situations.
  6. Pattern-Block Tracks - Block-style representation of patterns. The same Pattern data can be arranged with Pattern Clips in the Clip Track area of the Playlist (9).
  7. Track Focus and Options - Determines the clip type that will be selected (Audio, Automation or Pattern Clip) when clips of these types are stacked and selected with the mouse.
  8. Tracks Area Vertical Zoom
  9. Clip Tracks - There are three clip types, Audio Clips (which hold sample data), Automation Clips (automation data) and Pattern Clips (note data).
  10. Clip Select Menu - Use the menu at the top of the playlist or click the area to the left of the Clip Tracks to open a menu of clips available to be placed in the Clip Tracks. Once a clip is selected it can be added to the Playlist by left-clicking on an empty Clip Track space.
  11. Repeat Marker - Can be moved to select the repeat point for a playing project. While repeat positions will be ignored during rendering, setting the marker beyond the end of the last Playlist data will cause the project to be rendered to that point. Useful for ensuring decaying effect sounds are captured.
  12. Divider - Left click to drag the divider to change the relative area of the upper and lower Playlist. The divider can snap to a second position, move the divider to the desired location then Right-click to swap between the new and original location.

Pattern Blocks

Multiple patterns can be run simultaneously, however, be aware that if patterns share the same instrument channels there may be note conflicts, particularly in the case of monophonic instruments such as the TS404.

To place a pattern left-click its track while in draw () or paint () mode. Paint mode allows you to repeat pattern placement by dragging horizontally in the Playlist. To select the pattern to be placed click on the area (10) next to the Pattern track area and select the pattern clip from the menu.

Drag patterns by left-clicking and dragging the selected pattern(s) horizontally. You cannot, however, adjust the pattern length in the Playlist - this is controlled by the length of the note data (Step sequencer or Piano roll) or automation event data in the pattern.

Snap settings () control how patterns move against the background grid. Set this to 'line' if you want the patterns to snap to the bar boundaries, or 'none' if you want to freely position patterns.

Overlapping patterns are permitted, but please note that only one instance of each pattern can play at a time (i.e. each new bar 'cuts' the playback of the previous bar for the same pattern).

To erase a pattern, right-click it or use the left mouse button in erase () mode.

Patterns Clips

Pattern Clips can be arranged in the same manner as Audio and Automation Clips. These techniques are discussed in the section on Clip Tracks.
